I bet a few of you have already heard about the Satin/Silk cap or bonnet, that claims to give you better and glossier hair. If not, it is a simple cap, which usually comes in lovely colours that you can wear on your head to prevent your hair from breakage as you sleep. In a way it acts as a protective barrier and some have claimed that it is their ultimate secret for longer and silkier hair.

Since I am on my own healthy hair journey, always trying to make my hair softer and shinier (who wouldn’t?), I decided to try this out for one week and see if I could really reap the benefits. I got mine from Odd Atelier, which is a small local business, with a variety of cute items, and the one I got is made from satin.
At first I have to say that I was quite sceptical, since it is quite warm and humid where I live. I felt like putting my hair in a cap would only result in me having greasier hair or I would atleast wake up with a sweaty head. I was instead pleasantly surprised, after the very first night. Keep reading if you want my detailed experience or click here if you just want to know the pros and cons.
Day 1:
The first day I decided to wear it, I wanted to do everything right and so to start with clean, freshly washed hair. Once my hair was completely dry ( I let my hair air dry by the way, it’s less damaging), I twirled it up into a bun, and placed the cap over my head..before going to bed. Surely enough, the next morning I woke up to lovely locks! My hair just felt silkier and I could not stop running my hands through it. My scalp also did not feel oily or gross, despite being underneath a cap for 8+ hours (Ok maybe a little more, but we are in lockdown, so don’t judge me). I was quite happy but I also believed that this could be due to the fact that I just washed my hair and it would probably make it greasier eventually.
Day 4:
Well guess what? I was wrong! Even after 3 days, my hair actually felt cleaner, than when I tie it up into a bun or a ponytail to sleep (on a normal cotton pillow case). I also noticed less hair fall. There was hardly any hair in the cap, whereas I usually find a few on my pillow or on my sheets when I wake up. As for my scalp, it was not itchy or sweaty, so I can say things were still going great, and my hair kept feeling soft.
Day 7:
For the purpose of this review, I did not wash my hair again until the last day, and I can happily say that again my hair did not get any greasier than it usually would. In fact it felt cleaner for longer (and no it was not a placebo effect). As from day 5, I did not really notice any additional silkiness or softness, so overall it’s not something that will keep on improving the appearance of your hair overtime (like say a hair mask). But it will however give you great hair when you use it. You will notice the effects on the very first day, and I believe that it can help you reach your hair goals, because continuous use will mean less breakage and your hair should end up looking less frazzled.
If you did not feel like reading the whole thing, or if you got bored and just wanted the main key points, i’m here for you!

Pros:
- Silkier/softer hair when you wake up
- Visible results with the very first use
- Less hair breakage
- Scalp/hair feels cleaner for longer
- Comes in really lovely colour
Cons:
- It might slip off during the night, if you move a lot (even if it fits right)
- In summer, you may feel a little warm with it on (but this is easily fixed with a good fan)
- You may not look your sexiest with this cap on
I would also advise you to get 2 so that you can switch them up during the week.
I will definitely keep wearing mine and If you want to get one for yourself, make sure to check out the collection from Odd Atelier or comment down below if you know other local retailers!
Love & green vibes,
Vaneeda
